(Oct 20, 2001)
It's been pretty quiet since the initial consultation. However details are beginning to emerge of some of the changes that will be taking place on November 12th around the County services. The 44 (see Route F below) will still exist but now will only do three peak journeys a day, Only one morning service goes via Great Wratting, and two of the return journeys do. The first return journey also still serves Long Road Sixth Form college. The new 44 timetable is available of Suffolk CC's Traveline
Since there wasn't a second round of consultation, it's still unclear exactly how much (if at all) communities outside the new city services who are currently served by them will fare. It looks certain, for instance, that the 5A stretch to the Park-n-Ride at Newmarket Road will disappear.
The new buses for the Citi (unconfirmed as the branding, but looking likely) services have begun arriving, though it looks like they're being stored rather than put into general service beforehand - presumably so that the new services can be launched with a fanfare. The downside of this is that the first week or so could be quite fraught with teething troubles, like the Trident introduction where an electrical fault halted one vehicle and needed checks on all the others.
CamBUC is attempting to obtain more details about the new services. We'll post updates here as we get them.
(July 9, 2001)
Stagecoach in Cambridge today began a series of initial presentations of their plans for improvements to Cambridge City bus network. Please note that these are proposals only, and may well change before implementation. If you wish to comment on these proposals please contact Stagecoach in Cambridge directly, or CamBUC.
The core part of this plan revolves around the purchase of 40 new single deck buses with wheelchair and buggy access to replace the assorted range of vehicles in current use.
The only routes affected are the central city routes; 2, 3, 4, 5, 5A, 6, 8 and 44.
Where these also go out of the city (eg 4 to Sawston) it's not clear yet what will happen there. No doubt a service to Sawston will be maintained, but it may not start in Arbury any more.
The service is designed around six routes, three running at 10 minute intervals, and another three running at 30 minute intervals.
These are the proposed 10 minute routes:-
Route A runs from Arbury through the city, to Addenbrookes then to Cherry Hinton. It goes directly along Queen Edith's road without going into the estate. This is otherwise similar to the current 5.
Route B runs between Fison Road and the railway station, along the same route as the current 3.
Route C runs between the City Centre, Mill Road, Birdwood Road and Addenbrookes, as per the current 8.
These are the proposed 30 minute routes:-
Route D runs from the Fen Estate to the city centre, then Mill Road, Coleridge Road, Cherry Hinton Road, Queen Ediths, Cherry Hinton Road then as current route 2.
Route E runs from Buchan Street to the Beehive Centre, then Coldhams Lane, Cherry Hinton Church, Teversham and Fulbourn as current route 6.
Route F runs from the Cambridge Science Park to the centre, then Hills Road, Cherry Hinton Road and Fulbourn Road to Fulbourn. The city to Fulbourn leg of this is currently served by the hourly (approx) 44.
Or, in terms of the current routes:-
2 - Becomes service D. Runs to Fen Estate instead of Oakington. Goes around Queen Ediths estate instead of Walpole Road/Birdwood Road. Remains a 30 minute service.
3 - Becomes service B. No change to route. Ten minute frequency.
4 - Arbury/Addenbrookes journeys covered by route A at 10 minute interval.
5 - Becomes service A, at 10 minute frequency. The 5A extension to Newmarket Road P&R is discontinued. Service A doesn't go around the Queen Ediths estate, but service D will.
6 - Becomes service E, at thirty minute frequency. No change to route.
8 - Becomes service C, at ten minute frequency. No change to route.
44 - Becomes service F, running at thirty minute frequency from Fulbourn to city centre, with an extension to the Cambridge Science Park.
The major points being made in the presentation are:-
* Routes are being given more time, and layover time between journeys to improve timekeeping
* Service A replaces the 4/5 and 5A in Arbury
* All Arbury buses serve the Railway Station, Addenbrookes and Cherry Hinton
* A bus every five minutes from Addenbrookes and the Railway Station to the city centre
* Cherry Hinton gets a bus every 10 minutes to/from the city via Addenbrookes and the Railway Station (and a half-hourly service direct to the city centre).
* The Science Park gets a thirty minute service around the whole site, going out to Cherry Hinton and Fulbourn
